Here, lacquerware decoration known as raden, which was introduced to Japan around the 9th century, is still used today in lacquer craftsmanship.
The patterns made from thinly sliced shells such as abalone, mother-of-pearl, and white butterfly shells are delicate yet luxurious. These raden pieces are arranged in a mosaic-like pattern and individually applied into the grooves of aluminum, creating door handles reminiscent of fine art crafts. Since the raden is positioned where fingers don’t touch, it experiences minimal dirt and damage, ensuring its sparkle lasts for a long time.

Traditional Crafts

A new look for years to come.
The combination of the radiance and beautiful colors of shells, which took years to produce, with the profound texture of metal creates an impactful impression that leaves a lasting memory for all those who encounter the space. Shaped like the frame of a painting, these handles’ design evoke the feeling of attaching artwork to architecture. While adorned with the traditional decoration of mother-of-pearl inlays that have existed for centuries, they also set the stage for a futuristic aesthetic. Their designs, balancing both classic and modern elements, serve as items that add luxury and grandeur to any space.

Here, the extruded aluminum base material can be infinitely elongated, making it fully adjustable so that it can be tailored to the size of the fixture. By combining it with angled pieces, we have achieved a range of versatile applications. Adjusting the dimensions to fit the scale of the fixture provides a custom fit that seamlessly integrates into the space.

UNION's anodizing technology, honed over the years through its engagement with architecture, enables precise color control that seamlessly integrates into various spaces. The contrast between the dry texture of anodized aluminum and the glossy texture of mother-of-pearl enhances each material, resulting in a new architectural look unlike anything before.

By inlaying mother-of-pearl into numerous grooves, it's possible to protect against degradation over time while also providing a tactile experience. The natural luster created by untouched nature is a quality inherent to the material of the shell itself. Abalone, known for its exceptional brilliance among natural shells, is generously utilized in this top-tier shell inlay. Each shell is polished to prevent breakage, and artisans meticulously cut and inlay each piece according to the design, ensuring durability and beauty.
