These door handles are crafted using the techniques of “Kiso lacquerware” from Nagano.
Here, the lacquer coating is handled by an unconventional lacquerer who not only restores cultural properties but also works on industrial products like motorcycles and guitars.
By layering lacquer on a brass base, the golden hue of the brass emerges from beneath, deepening with use. The design is inspired by shrine torii gates and drum bridges in Japanese gardens.

Traditional Crafts

Brass is one of the flagship materials used within UNION’s product production. It is the only metal used in architecture with a golden hue and provides a versatile material capable of various types of processing. As it is used over time, it transforms into an antique color alongside the architectural work, evoking the history and story of the building in its appearance. Brass castings, in particular, have a unique texture that cannot be achieved by machining alone.

Applying lacquer on top of brass castings enhances their elegance even further. MISOLA Japan Arts and Crafts, which employs a meticulous technique used among lacquer craftsmen, creates a fusion of traditional lacquer craftsmanship with modern painting techniques used on items such as motorcycles, guitars, and silver accessories. This fusion of lacquering, developed by artisans who have dedicated themselves to mastering traditional techniques and adapting them to various materials, represents a blend of traditional craftsmanship with innovative approaches.

Products are finished utilizing traditional techniques that highlight the natural colors of iron and lacquer without the use of pigments. Kiso-Hirasawa, located in Nagano, Japan, carries historical significance as a lacquerware production center that has provided lacquer products to travelers along the Nakasendo Highway. Here, efforts are made to preserve traditional techniques while creating products that suit contemporary lifestyles. MISOLA Japan Arts and Crafts is an integral part of the local cultural heritage restoration team in Kiso-Hirasawa, engaging in projects such as the restoration of important cultural properties like Ueno Toshogu Shrine and the production of classical items based on long-held techniques. Simultaneously, they explore the possibilities of unique lacquering processes based on their original technical experience.

To better sense the heritage of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship and its textured expressions and appreciate the aging process of metal protected over the ages by lacquer traditionally used to preserve wooden vessels, we have incorporated arch-shaped designs reminiscent of Japan's beautiful curves seen in swords, torii gates, and bridges. This metal ages alongside the architecture and combines beautifully with the traditional techniques and beautiful designs of Kiso-Hirasawa to further enhance the allure of lacquerware.
